He claimed an exemption due to "Member of Friends Church". He was recorded as medium height, stout, grey eyes, dark brown hair, and "neuritis in left leg caused by typhoid fever".⁵

In 1942 Joseph Harrison Hinshaw, age 54, registered for the World War II draft in Morgan County, Indiana. He declared he was born 12/30/1887 in Chatham, North Carolina, and was then residing in Monrovia, Indiana, a self-employed farmer. He declared his relative/contact was "Mrs. Joseph Hinshaw (Edna A)". He was recorded as 5'10" tall, 210 lbs., blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion.¹¹
