Cannie's sister Belle had a son by the husband of their sister Sarah, and this son, Robert Criger, was taken-in by Cannie and Robert and raised by them6 (and he assumed the name Robert Hill, sometimes Robert Hill Jr.).
Cannie had no children of her own, but raised Robert's son "Bill" Hill, sister Belle's son Robert (Criger) Hill, and an orphan named Oland Harmon.6

Cannie Christina Hanshew died Apr 3 1947, Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia; buried Riverside Church Chilhowie, Virginia.6,9 Cannie died after a lengthy illness.6
After Cannie died Robert moved to Washington, D.C. to live with his only son, William Lee Hill.6
Robert died Mar 31 1949, at the home of his son, Washington, D.C.6
