WITH PEN IN HAND The Sudden Death of J.C. Henshaw
of the Santa Fe.J. G. Henshaw, employed in the baggage department of the Santa Fe, Prescott & Phoenix railroad dropped dead yesterday afternoon. A woman by the name of Mrs. Martha Litz, who was sending out a couple of trunks, went to the depot for the purpose of having them checked. Mr. Henshaw wheeled them into the depot and weighed them. He discovered that there was an excess on each and when Mrs. Litz asked how much it would amount to he stepped upon a platform at his desk and taking a pen proceeded to make a calculation. Mrs. Litz noticed that he leaned to one side. She mistook the movement for an attitude of calculation but the next instant she was undeceived. Mr. Henshaw partially straightened and fell backward across the scales. Mrs. Litz ran out of the depot and screamed, bringing to the baggageroom several persons who picked up the prostrate man and laid him in a comfortable position. A doctor was sent for and in a few minutes Dr. Conner came. Henshaw expired almost upon his arrival. He had never been conscious from the moment of his falling. His face had been purple and death was almost certainly caused by an apoplectic stroke.
Justice Burnett impaneled a coroner's jury which viewed the body and then adjourned until today to receive the testimony of the physician.
The body of Mr. Henshaw was taken to his home at 704 West Madison street from which the funeral will be held some time on Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Henshaw came to the valley several years ago and bought the old Massie farm not far from town. He afterward entered the service of the railroad company and until recently he was stationed at Peoria.
James' obituary was published in "The Ottumwa Courier" (Ottumwa, Iowa) on Thursday, May 21, 1903:4
OBITUARY James Gaston Henshaw was born in Prattsville, Ohio, August 8, 1844. He came with his parents to Wisconsin when but a small boy, and from there to Iowa. While a student in the Oskaloosa college he responded to the call of his country and enlisted ofr [sic] the civil war in 1861, and served for three years and a half. At the close of the war, while living in Chillicothe, he was married to Malissa Mark, December 27, 1866.
For twenty-six years, Mr. Henshaw was in the employ of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Ry., serving as agent fourteen years at Chillicothe and twelve years at Bethany, Mo. For a short time, on account of declining health, he gave up his agency and moved on a small fruit farm.
Five years ago, October 15, he came to Phoenix and was placed in charge of the office of the Santa Fe, Phoenix & Prescott, at Peoria. Last February he moved back to Phoenix, and in March was given charge of the station work in this city. While faithfully discharging his duty he fell at his post Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
The Christian life of Brother Henshaw began thirty-two years ago. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church and during all the years has proven himself a worthy and faithful follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.
His home life was one of the most tender and affectionate kind, choosing rather to dwell in the quiet and comfort of home than to engage in the affairs of public or social life.
Four daughters have been born in the home, one dying in infancy; another, Mrs. Dean, passing away three years ago, January 10, 1900, while two daughters remain to comfort their mother in this her hour of deepest sorrow.
Brother Henshaw had lived that kind of a life that death could not destroy, and although his death was sudden, he was not found unprepared.
The funeral service will be held from the family residence, corner of Seventh avenue and Madison street, tomorrow afternoon at 4:30. The G.A.R. will attend and have charge of the services at the grave. -- Phoenix, Arizona.
