During the Civil War, Alonzo Hinshaw of Knightstown served as a Private in the 2nd Independent Battery, Light Artillery, Indiana Volunteers.9,10,11 Mustered in September 1, 1861.9,11 Captured near Camden, Arkansas, April 18, 1864.9 He was taken to Camp Ford, Tyler, Smith County, Texas.9,12 In August 1864 he was part of a group of 504 prisoners transferred to Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Texas.9,12 On Dec 12 1864 he was part of a prisoner exchange at Galveston, Texas.9,12 Mustered out February 24, 1865.9,11 His military record notes "Distinguished Service".11

On July 6, 1888 Alonzo Hinshaw filed for a pension as an invalid veteran of 2nd Independent Battery, Indiana Light Artillery.19
