During the Civil War, Alonzo Hinshaw of Knightstown served as a Private in the 2nd Independent Battery, Light Artillery, Indiana Volunteers.9,10,11  Mustered in September 1, 1861.9,11  Captured near Camden, Arkansas, April 18, 1864.9  He was taken to Camp Ford, Tyler, Smith County, Texas.9,12  In August 1864 he was part of a group of 504 prisoners transferred to Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Texas.9,12  On Dec 12 1864 he was part of a prisoner exchange at Galveston, Texas.9,12  Mustered out February 24, 1865.9,11  His military record notes "Distinguished Service".11

He then married Mary W. Jones4,5,6,14,16, Jan 11 18834,5,6,14,16 [Jan 10 188317], Presbyterian Church, Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana4,5,6,14,16.  Mary, daughter of Dan D. + Juliet N. Jones4,18, was born Oct 6 18584,18 [Oct - 18618], Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana4,18.  

The pastor of Presbyterian Church, Cambridge City, Indiana, recorded the following entry in his journal:4

Jan. 11th 1883 Alonzo Hinshaw, 40 years & Mary Jones, 25 yrs.  Both of Camb. City Ind.  $5.00

During the period 1883-1885, Alonzo and Mary Hinshaw were recorded as members of Presbyterian Church, Cambridge City, Indiana.4  On Apr 8 1883 Mrs. Mary Hinshaw (adult) was baptized at the Presbyterian Church.4  

On July 6, 1888 Alonzo Hinshaw filed for a pension as an invalid veteran of 2nd Independent Battery, Indiana Light Artillery.19  

Alonzo and Mary were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 2 1900), Church Street, Cambridge, Wayne County, Indiana:8

Hinshaw, Alonzo, head-of-household, age 56, born Oct 1843 in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; married 17 years; occupation: clerk, R.R. office; owned home (free).
Hinshaw, Mary J., wife, age 38, born Oct 1861 in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Ohio; married 17 years; no children.

Mary died Jun 14 190018,20 [Jun 11 190021], Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana18,20; buried Riverside cemetery, Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana18,20.  

Mary died from extensive burns after an accident using gasoline.18,20  Mary's accident was reported in the "Cambridge City Tribune" (Cambridge City, Indiana) on Thursday, June 14, 1900;20 Mary's death was reported in the "Cambridge City Tribune" (Cambridge City, Indiana) on Thursday, June 21, 190018 (see scans below).  

Alonzo Hinshaw died Dec 6 1925, at his home, National Hotel, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana; age 83.5,22,23  

Alonzo's death was reported in the "Cambridge City Tribune" (Cambridge City, Indiana) on Thursday, December 10, 192523 (see scan below).
