BOONVILLE -- Mrs. Bonnie Hutchens Hinshaw, 97, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 8, 1903, to the late Nathan Gurney and Dollie Elizabeth Patterson Hutchens in Yadkin County, Mrs. Hinshaw married Sanford B. Hinshaw Dec. 25, 1924, who preceded her in death June 1, 1983. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, William Patterson (Pat) Hutchens and Paul Brewer Hutchens of East Bend; and sisters, Ruth H. Hardy of East Bend, Berniece H. Steelman of Mocksville; half-sister Hattie Willard of Winston-Salem and son-in-law Allen Paul (Red) Speer Jr. of Boonville. Mrs. Hinshaw, a servant of the Lord, an active and devoted parishioner, was the oldest living member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting having served as Sunday school teacher, superintendent, choir member, recording clerk of monthly meetings (14 years), active elder and honorary elder for life. She was also a charter member of the Rosa Edgerton Missionary Circle, a life member of the United Society of Friends Women of North Carolina Yearly Meeting, treasurer of the Jolly Friends Senior Citizens and a member of the Della Woodhouse Mission Group in Boonville. Mrs. Hinshaw devoted her life to her faith. ''Miss Bonnie,'' as she was affectionately called by her colleagues, worked for the Winston-Salem Production Credit Association in Yadkin County for 26 years. She also did secretarial work periodically for the register of deeds, clerk of court and the tax supervisor of Yadkinville, served as town clerk and was the collector for the Central Telephone Co. in Yadkinville for 17 years. In addition, she was an insurance agent for Allied Life Insurance Co. Mrs. Hinshaw was co-owner of the ''Tots and Teens Shop'' in Yadkinville with her good friend, Mrs. Nell Long, for 18 1/2 years, retiring in 1974. Mrs. Hinshaw moved to Boonville in 1986 to be near her two daughters and although she found many very special relationships in that area, she kept close contact with her friends in Yadkinville. ''Miss Bonnie'' loved her family, home, church and life in general. Her philosophy was ''God first, others second and self last''. She demonstrated this by her unending love and devotion to her faith, her family and her many friends. A personal ministry through years was to support and prepare meals for pastors, evangelists and Christian workers. Much of what she did was behind the scenes. She worked hard for humanity but not for praise. Taking many different jobs to make ends meet during the Depression, she was a model of outstanding work ethic and, even in her nineties, never tired of doing for others, including sharing her famous apple pies. Mrs. Hinshaw was proud to use the following as her guide to life: Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frieda Hinshaw Speer and Mrs. June Hinshaw Smithdeal and son-in-law Richard of Boonville; five beloved grandchildren include Miss Bonnie Lynn Smithdeal of Wilmington, Mrs. Brenda Smithdeal Proctor and husband Tim of Lewisville, Drs. Beth Smithdeal Bryant and husband Aubrey of Lexington, S.C., Mrs. Sandra Speer Bryant and husband Barry of Clemmons and Drs. Allen Paul Speer III and wife Janet of Banner Elk. She is also survived by two dear stepgreat-grandsons, Donovan Carroll of Banner Elk and Barton Carroll of Seattle, Wash. She is also survived by seven cherished great-grandchildren, Daniel and Jeremy Bryant, Laura and Erika Proctor, Carsten, Bonnie Elizabeth and Samuel Bryant. Surviving also are a beloved sister, Mrs. Dollie Mae Davis, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Nina Woodruff Hutchens of East Bend. In addition are a number of special nieces, nephews and a host of friends. The family would like to express gratitude to all the doctors and nurses at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and Yadkin Valley Home Health for their outstanding loving care. Thanks to friends who helped ''Miss Bonnie'' enjoy life to the fullest. She loved everyone. May God bless each one. Funeral services are to be conducted at Harmony Grove Friends Meeting (Quaker church) at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, with the Rev. Don Cunningham and Dr. Harold Salmons officiating. Family will greet friends in the Crater Room of Harmony Grove in Yadkinville from 2 to 3 p.m. before the service. At the time of her death, Bonnie was the oldest living member of her meeting, having served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and for fourteen years as Recording Clerk. An elder of the meeting, she was also recognized as an honorary elder for life. A founding member of the Rosa Edgerton Missionary Circle, Bonnie was also a member of The United Society of Friends Women of North Carolina Yearly Meeting, the Della Woodhouse Mission Group, and was treasurer of the Jolly Friends Senior Citizens. Bonnie worked for the Winston-Salem Production Credit Association for 26 years. Survivors include her sister, Dollie Mae Davis; her daughters, Frieda Speer and June (Richard) Smithdeal; grandchildren Bonnie Lynn Smithdeal, Brenda (Tim) Proctor, Beth (Aubrey) Bryant, Sandra (Barry) Bryant, and Allen Paul (Janet) Speer III; two step-great-grandsons; seven great-grandchildren.
