Mrs. Emeline Johnson Died Monday Evening

Mrs. Emeline Johnson passed away at her home on North O'Keefe street in this village Monday evening after an illness of eight weeks at the age of 81 years and 4 months.  Funeral services will be held at the home this (Thursday) afternoon, and burial will be in Young's Prairie cemetery.

Emeline Hinshaw was the daughter of Abijah and Hannah Hinshaw, pioneer residents of Penn township, where she was born June 28, 1849.  She there grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage Dec. 31, 1868 to Joshua Johnson, who preceded her in death about two years ago.  They became the parents of three children, Ella, wife of Daniel E. Hatch of Cassopolis, Frank (deceased), and Eston Johnson, residing on the home farm in Penn.  Mr. And Mrs. Johnson lived on their farm in Penn from the time of their marriage in 1868 until March 1917, when they moved to this village.  Since the death of Mr. Johnson, Mr. And Mrs. Hatch and son Oliver had lived in the home with her and cared for her.  In addition to the children above named, she is survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and by a step-brother, Harmon W. Crook of Cassopolis.  Mrs. Johnson was the last of five sisters.

In the vicinity where she spent her life she was highly respected and esteemed by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

Emeline's family bible is today in the possession of grandson Francis Elwood Johnson ().  Inside the front cover is written "Presented to Mrs. Emeline Johnson by Her Husband, Dec 25, 1881"3
