My thoughts/observations - self-critique on Regular Expressions by Michael Paoli presented to BALUG 2009-07-21 Wee bit too much to quite fit "comfortably" in about an hour's time, should trim/drop/squeeze out the least important 20% or so (leave it out entirely, or relegate to a "footnote" or the like (supplemental materials, etc.), but mostly skip past that least important 20% or so (e.g. much of the shell stuff). Work in more examples - both to illustrate points, and perhaps even more so to emphasize some of the useful powerful stuff regular expressions can do (particularly where such is difficult/infeasible without regular expressions) ... and try to pick "interesting"(/amusing/exciting/entertaining/practical) examples Work in more question and answer time and more wriggle room for interactivity/questions along the way. Practice it more (fairly smooth, but could be smoother). Improve notes to self - make them much more concise, toss out stuff that's redundant with slides - follow along the notes! (practice doing slides, reading notes to self, watching audience, etc., and doing all smoothly at the same time). - at the 2009-07-21 presentation I mostly ignored my notes to self - mostly worked off slides - notes to self should mostly just cover noteworthy stuff I'd otherwise be probable to forget to mention Should work out / polish the timeline (pacing) a bit better - seems it typically takes me about 20% longer than I estimate based on my "dry runs" - should factor that in for more realistic estimate of actual time something takes to present. BALUG - due to video projection limitations, for the live demo bits, should have used significantly larger effective font (and thus also show less than 80x24 terminal window) Pretty well covered most of what I intended to cover - could still be more polished (e.g. better prioritization - reducing some less important stuff, more coverage of key stuff of interest (e.g. relevant examples)). Ended up not showing ed(1) 1979 regular expression bits from man page (tight for time anyway) - "interesting" - but perhaps should be relegated to a footnote or supplemental materials? Errata: One typo found in "slides" (so far ... oops) - fix it. ... fixed literal - in character class was slightly misstated; only literal at end: fixed Forgot to do the BALUG door prize drawing thingy :-/ (a wee bit much to do most of the BALUG coordination bits for BALUG *and* be the presenter - all at the same meeting). - doing pretty good if that's all I forgot (prize(s) weren't exactly "to die for" or very time sensitive this time around anyway)).
