This newsletter has information on our new web interface, a new account level and special pricing for new Full/Enhanced account signups. The topics covered today are: * Help beta test new web interface * Ad Free account level to be launched, Member level signups to be removed * Special pricing for new Full/Enhanced signups * A very special present: the Gift of Sight * New web browsers with improved security and features available _________________________________________________________________ Help beta test new web interface For the past year, we've been working on a large overhaul of our web interface. With the help of some great designers as well as feedback from our users, we're now ready to release the interface for more general beta testing. * Beta site - http://www.fastmail.fm/beta/ * Overall features * Professional look with cleaner layout, reduced clutter and small icons to simplify some actions * More consistent layout between screens (eg navigation bar always available, common sidebar) * Javascript used to improve user experience (although it still works fine without) * More semantic HTML makes future stylesheet (look and feel) customisation easier * Significantly improved mobile display on modern mobile devices (eg iPhone, Opera Mini, Opera Mobile) Mailbox screen * Much better keyboard support - navigate using keys j/k/x/o/Enter, action menu via . (fullstop), search email via / (slash), search folders via , (comma) * Better auto-sizing to screen size to display more of the message subject * Cross folder searching available * Advanced search syntax available (eg. from:john subject:dinner since:"1 week ago") Message read * Much better keyboard support (like mailbox screen) * Attached messages shown inline * Attached images as thumbnails * Better integration with file storage to save attachments Compose * Address book auto-complete and address tokenisation * Improved HTML editor * Auto-saving of drafts * Background upload of attached files * Improved spell check * Separate reply/forward quoting options * Default font face/size for HTML email For more details, please see our new interface wiki page. To report bugs/issues, please see our new interface bugs page. We encourage all users to give the new interface a go and report any issues on the bug wiki page. We plan to eventually roll out the new interface to http://www.fastmail.fm so all standard logins use the new interface. Depending on feedback, that should occur in the next month or two. We plan to run the old interface for 3-6 months after the changeover, but will eventually decommission the old interface. If you have any particular comments you want to make about the new interface, please email me directly at robm@fastmail.fm. _________________________________________________________________ Ad Free account level to be launched, Member level signups to be removed Over the past 7 years, FastMail has had 4 different service levels for individual accounts: Guest (free), Member (one-time $14.95), Full ($19.95/year) and Enhanced ($39.95/year). As market conditions have changed, we've updated the features offered by each level to stay competitive while remaining profitable so we can continue to offer our service for the long term. Recent data we've collected has shown that the Member level is not being used very much. However we did identify a market for a low priced, small storage, ad-free account. Because of that, from the start of 2009 we will be removing the ability to signup for new "Member" accounts, and replacing it with a new level called "Ad Free" (if you have an existing Member level account or Member level fallback, don't worry, see below). The main details of the new level are: * US$4.95/year * No ads in the web interface * All access protocols - IMAP/POP/SMTP/LDAP/Jabber * 30M email storage, 2M file storage * 160M bandwidth/month The account level is already available on our beta server (http://www.fastmail.fm/beta/), so if you want to upgrade an existing account or signup a new account you can do so there. Any account you do signup/upgrade there will be fully useable on the beta and also the regular production server as well, we just don't have layout space to list it until the Member level is closed. If you have been thinking of getting a Member level account, then you should do so before 2009. Existing Member/Member "fallback" users: We're not making any changes to existing users, the only change is that from 2009, you won't be able to signup a new Member level account. Users with existing Member level accounts will stay exactly as they are. If you have an existing Full/Enhanced account that has a Member level "fallback", then that will also stay exactly the same, and if you don't renew, your account will become a Member level account. _________________________________________________________________ Special pricing for new Full/Enhanced signups For the next month, we're offering special pricing for all new signups of Full and Enhanced accounts (Sorry, new signups only. Not applicable to renewals, upgrades or family/business accounts). * Full - US$14.95/year (normally US$19.95/year) * Enhanced - US$34.95/year (normally US$39.95/year) _________________________________________________________________ A very special present: the Gift of Sight A personal message from FastMail.FM founder Jeremy Howard: When I recently got married, my wife Evelyn and I asked our wedding guests to give a very special present: the Gift of Sight. The Fred Hollows Foundation, created to continue the work of 1990 Australian of the Year Fred Hollows, can restore sight to a person suffering from cataract blindness, for a cost of just $25. Our wedding guests all gave to this wonderful cause - and Evelyn and I also contributed $20,000, enough to restore sight to 800 people, in many of the poorest parts of the world. If you would also like to give this very special present to those who most need it, we've made it really easy by providing a donation screen directly within FastMail. If you're reading this through FastMail's web interface, just click the following link to donate: Give the Gift of Sight. If you're reading this through an email program (e.g. Outlook), then please login to FastMail's web site, click 'Options', and then click 'Donate'. Evelyn and I, and all of the FastMail team, thank all of you who contribute to this vital humanitarian project. _________________________________________________________________ New web browsers with improved security and features available We recently checked some statistics on which web browser people are using and found that a number of people are still using older browsers than they need to. If you're using Internet Explorer 6 or lower, Firefox 2 or lower, Opera 9.5 or lower, or any version of Netscape, we highly recommend that you consider upgrading to a more recent browser. All the browsers below have significant improvements over previous versions, including better phishing protection through Extended Validation SSL and general security and reliability improvements. * Firefox 3.0 - Independent tests show that Firefox 3.0 is one of the fastest and most memory efficient browsers available. It's updated bookmarking system and large list of free add-ons make it one of the best all-round browsers to use. Any users of Firefox 1.x or Firefox 2.x should definitely upgrade, and all users should consider using Firefox. * Internet Explorer 7 - is still one of the most popular browsers, but many people are still using IE6. For Windows users, IE7 is a free download, and includes all the IE6 features you're used to, but also improved phishing and fraud detection and tabbed browsing. Any users of Internet Explorer 6 should definitely upgrade. * Opera 9.6 - Opera browser has always been the plucky contender, and with version 9.6 they've made their best release yet. With performance as good as Firefox 3, and built in features like Opera Link to synchronise bookmarks and contacts between multiple machines, smart screen scaling, and a built in bittorrent client for fast downloading, users should definitely take a look at Opera 9.6. Thanks for reading. Remember, if you don't want to receive these updates, click Options, then Account Preferences, and change your Communications Frequency. If you want to terminate your FastMail.FM account for some reason, click Options, and then Cancel Account. Thanks as always for using FastMail.FM!
