Alice had tried to follow a rabbit through a hole at the base of a tree, but unfortunately had fallen down a deep hole and couldn't rapidly find a way to get back up and out. She thence found herself in a strange place where everyone was rather eccentric if not outright insane. While looking for somebody sane enough to answer her query how to get back home, she happened upon a tea party, hosted by the Mad Hatter. The other guests were the rabbit she had been following, who merely rushed in and grabbed a sip of tea and rushed off faster than Alice could react to follow, and a doormouse who was very very drowsy, repeatedly falling asleep right into his cup of tea.

The host was quite rude to Alice, asking her stupid questions like "Would you like another cup of tea?" when she hadn't had any yet, and then offering absurd mathmatically correct but totally insane reasoning to justify the question. At some point Alice herself must have temporarily lost control of her sanity, because she decided that she would make a better host than the Mad Hatter. She began by asking generally to her two guests "How many teas would you like?". The doormouse was momentarily shaken out of his slumber by her sharp young female voice, and managed to mumble "uh" as he started to look around and count the two guests, plus Alice who presumably would like some tea herself too, and finally began to answer for the whole group "3 t...", at which point he fell asleep back into his teacup before he could finish the word "tea".
