Ann Wrathall Stirk

In Sept. 2008, Derek Wrathall of Skipton , who can be reached at dwrathall(at)totalise(dot)co(dot)uk, sent the following information about Ann Wrathall, sister of James Wrathall of Grantsville, Utah :
Josie Walsh contacted me recently to say that she had found a Wrathall marriage in the Carleton parish registers. Carleton is a village near Skipton, sometimes spelt Carlton, especially in the older records. With a little checking I find that Ann is the sister of your ancestor, James, born at Bordley. The details of the marriage are as follows:
28 Sep 1868 Thomas Stirk, of full age, bachelor of this parish, (no occupation), father George Stirk, farmer, and Ann Wrathall, of full age, spinster, servant, father John Wrathall, labourer, by banns at St. Mary's Church, Carleton.
Thomas appears in the 1861 census as a servant aged 14, an under-gardener at Ravenshaw, Carlton, to the family of John Robinson, banker, with his place of birth given as Kildwick. Ann appears as a house servant aged 21 at Carlabeck, Carlton, in the family of John Slingsby, cotton manufacturer, with her place of birth given as Bordley. She also appears in the 1851 census as a servant aged 11, born Bordley, at Grassington in the household of Jane Waddilove, a power loom weaver.

In the 1871 census the family appear in Carlton (RG10/4266) with Thomas Stirk, Head, aged 24, Coachman, born Skipton, Ann his wife aged 31 born Bordley, and children Herbert aged 2 born Carlton, and Thomas Edward aged 1 born Carlton.

In the 1881 census they appear in Skipton at 54 Rowland Street, with Thomas Stirk, Head, aged 34, Coachman, born Carleton, Ann his wife aged 41 born Boardley Moor, and children Herbert, aged 12, scholar, born Bradley, Thomas Edward, aged 11 born Carlton, Alfred, aged 8 born Carlton, Edith A. aged 6, Scholar, born Carlton, George aged 4 born Skipton and Susan aged 1 born Skipton.

In the 1891 census they appear in Skipton at 9 Bank Yard (Bank House), with Thomas, Head, aged 44, Coachman (crossed through and replaced with Groom) Domestic Servant, born Skipton, Ann his wife aged 51 born Bradley Moor, and children Herbert aged 22 Rlw engine cleaner, born Carleton, Alfred aged 18 Joiner's apprentice born Carleton, Edith A. aged 16 assists at home, born Skipton, George aged 14, Printer's apprentice born Skipton, and Susan E. aged 11, Scholar born Skipton.

Ann must have died between the 1891 and 1901 censuses because in the 1901 census Thomas appears in Skipton at No 51 High Street, Craven Bank House, Head aged 55, Coachman (Domestic) born Skipton, with wife Elizabeth aged 47 born Hardrow, with children George aged 24, Printer compositor, born Skipton, and Susan aged 21, Dressmaker born Skipton.

Bordley, or Boardley, and Bradley seem to have got mixed up but I am confident that Bordley is correct.
