A military spokesman said Thursday that 48 Indian troops have been killed, with 12 missing. A front-line army commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Indian casualties were far higher, but could not give specifics. Pakistani army officials estimate India has deployed 30,000 soldiers to dislodge the 600 militants who infiltrated the snowy peaks last month. India says it has killed around 400 guerrillas so far.
