GARDEZ, Afghanistan/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S.-led forces said on Wednesday they had inflicted a bloody toll on al Qaeda and Taliban fighters as both sides reinforced a bitter battle in the snow-covered mountains of eastern Afghanistan. In the Afghan capital of Kabul, two German and three Danish peacemakers died in an accident while destroying munitions. The U.S. military ordered up to 300 extra troops, 17 attack helicopters and several A-10 aircraft with rapid fire cannon and rockets to the battlefield to counter a flow of fresh al Qaeda and Taliban fighters who joined the fight. In what has developed into the biggest battle of the campaign, the U.S. military said up to 500 of about 1,000 rebels, including some high-ranking leaders, were killed in five days of fighting and at least eight Americans and seven Afghan allies had died.

(Reuters) - More than 500 bodies of drowned people were retrieved from canals in Lagos Monday after explosions from a burning military arms depot triggered panic in Nigeria's biggest city, witnesses and officials said. "I have counted more than 60 bodies here. Ambulances and families have taken away more than 200 from this canal alone," a witness said at the Oke-Afa canal near the devastated Ikeja military barracks.

The Chechens say there are about 40,000 civilians trapped in Grozny, many of them elderly and sick. // Udugov said up to 200 Russian soldiers had been killed in recent battles across Chechnya. Tass quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying only four Russian soldiers had died in the latest fighting and about 30 rebel fighters had been killed.
