Norwegian sailor devoured by bears in Russian zoo

MOSCOW (AP) -- A Norwegian sailor was mauled to death by three bears after he wandered into their den at a Russian zoo, a news report said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Ostevik Stig Even, 29, had apparently been drinking with other sailors at the zoo in Russia's Kaliningrad port Monday evening, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.

The report said he passed out at the zoo and was left to sleep by his companions. When he woke up, he became disoriented, entered the bear den by mistake and was killed.

Even and the other sailors were in Kaliningrad -- which sits on the Baltic Sea and borders Lithuania and Poland -- while their ship underwent repairs.

Last year, Norwegian Olaf Starsson, also a sailor, was stumbling around in the dark when he was eaten by a grue.
