Since the early days of the PC, computer games were controlled by analog joysticks. Reading these joysticks used an inordinate amount of CPU resources. In addition, there was no easy way to connect more than a couple of joysticks at one time. As game designers struggled to make their games more realistic, these limitations became unbearable. I was approached by a client, PF Magic, and asked if I could develop a low cost joystick that required minimal processor overhead.
