A Simple Analysis of the All-Stars

9 February, 1996

Every year, I take a quick look at the players in the All-Star Game. Sometimes, I get upset at the selections, but I promise not to do that this year. No, this year, I'll just show you some of my calculated stats and interpret them a little. For the standard stats, like field goals, assists, etc., I suggest you check out one of the locations in the Statistical Repository. I got mine from Doug Steele.

I have reproduced most of my full complement of stats for the all-stars below, but with one qualifier. All of my stats require some knowledge of the team's performance and -- well, I didn't have the time to input them all. So, the following individual stats account for the individuals in the context of a generic 0.500 team. I have studied this before, by the way. When you take a player's individual stats and put them in the context of a worse team, that player looks worse. You can figure out what it means for individuals being put in the context of a better team. So, most of the players below play on better than 0.500 teams and actually look better than their numbers below. This effect is exaggerated for the win-loss records and relatively small for the Floor Percentage and Offensive Rating. The defensive numbers are also contaminated less, except for the Defensive Rating.

What this means is that the offensive numbers in the first few columns are the most relevant. These show that the East has a slightly better offensive team and that they probably should be favored. The west is probably better defensively, though. But no one plays defense in the All-Star Game, do they?

Generally, I have favored the better offensive collection in the past. I'm not going to change that this year, but the numbers are a lot closer this year than in the past. What I would suggest to anyone who wants to do more is weight the stats by how much they expect people to play in the game then determine who looks better. For instance, first timers rarely get many minutes.
