Abbott B. Henshaw was known in East Aurora, his lifelong home, for serving the public as a town councilman and supervisor, and also as owner of East Aurora Hardware.  Service to his country predated that, as he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Henshaw, 94, died Aug. 3 at Absolut Care in East Aurora.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and the Korean War.  He continued his military service in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1965 with the rank of major.

Mr. Henshaw was a councilman for the Town of Aurora from 1950 to 1965, and served as town supervisor from 1965 through 1983.  He was president of the Association of Erie County Governments in 1971, and served as president of the Association of Towns of the State of New York from 1974 to 1975.

He owned East Aurora Hardware for 33 years, taking over from his grandfather and retiring in 1987.  He was a past director of the New York State Retail Hardware Association and was its president in 1966.

Mr. Henshaw served on the board of directors for the East Aurora Chamber of Commerce and was a local chairman for the Heart Fund and United Fund drives.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge 694 and the Ismailia Shriners Temple.  He was a member of Post 205, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Post 362, American Legion.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of East Aurora, where he was a past deacon and trustee.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Beryl R.; a daughter, Valerie Escalera; and son, David B.
