Marriage remains strong for more than 72 years

GREENSBORO -- Ruby Wallace and Arnold Hinshaw were so much in love they decided to forgo a fancy wedding ceremony and elope to Danville, Va., in Arnold's 1931 Roadster.

Plus, they wanted to avoid Arnold's mother, who thought Ruby was too young and should wait a year to marry.  Ruby was 18, and Arnold was 22.

"We decided to surprise her," Ruby said with a sly smile.  "We couldn't wait."

That was almost 73 years ago, and Ruby still loves to show her affection for her sweetheart with lots of hugs and kisses.  Ruby, 91, and Arnold, 94, live at Morningview of Greensboro, an assisted-living facility.  An abundance of old black-and-white framed photos, as well as color photos of their family, adorn the couple's apartment, testament of a long and happy marriage.

Married Dec. 9, 1933, Ruby and Arnold met at a hosiery mill during the Depression.

"She was a beautiful girl," Arnold said.

"I thought he was so handsome," Ruby said.

For their first date, they went to a school play in Kernersville with another couple.  Ruby was quickly smitten, as was Arnold.

"I liked everything about him, he was considerate, and he was so good to my family," Ruby said.

After their marriage, they lived separately for two months -- she with an aunt and he at home, until they told Arnold's mother.

"She was OK with it.  It was just hard for her letting her only child go," Ruby said.  "She and I got along well."

They lived in a small rental house until they saved enough money to build a house in the Highland Park neighborhood.  They lived there for 22 years before building a home in Sedgefield Lakes.

Six years after they were married they had their son, Arnold, who goes by "Rudy."  The couple has two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The couple enjoyed boating, and Arnold water-skied up until the 1980s.  They also enjoyed spending time at their house at Long Beach.

They were both active members of Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church during their marriage, and worked with the youth group for years.  Many of those youths, now grown, keep in touch and visit.

Arnold was a salesman for North State Chevrolet for 38 years and won trips for the couple to places such as England, France, Italy, Ireland and the Bahamas.

On Friday nights, they enjoyed going to downtown Greensboro, where they visited Hamburger Square and the California Fruit Stand for a hot dog and a visit to the theater.

Ruby was president of the Greensboro Women's Club, crocheted for many years and loved to play bridge.  They both are members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.  (She is a Rebekah.) Arnold often proudly reminds those around him that he was a member of the first graduating class of Greensboro Senior High, now Grimsley High School.

When their son went away to college, Ruby decided to go back and pursue a lifelong desire to become a nurse.  She became a licensed practical nurse, working for Dr. Harold Spangler and Dr. William Norment, until she retired in the late 1960s.

When they were both in their 70s and retired, they joined an adult square dancing group and danced three nights a week for years.

"I think that's why they are still so lucid and energetic," said their son, Rudy.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a large celebration at their church.  Their son and daughter-in-law, Maxie, put together a small 70th wedding anniversary celebration for them a few years ago at Morningview.

A broken hip for Arnold and skull fracture after a fall for Ruby about three years ago slowed them down and led them to sell their home and move to Morningview.  Meticulous about her appearance, Ruby has her hair done each week and exercises every day.  She also enjoys Bible study and music programs at Morningview.  Arnold enjoys still trying to keep up with his perky wife and watching TV.

Asked how they kept their marriage so strong for almost 73 years, Ruby replied, "You have to love one another even in the bad times."

"I'm just glad she put up with me all those years," Arnold said with a laugh.
