He married Anne Shaw, Jun 18 1841, Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.b    (New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland).c    (Ann Shaw)c    [it is unknown why their marriage was recorded at both churchs].
John lived at CrossRidge (possibly Crossriggs), New Monkland Farm, Lanarkshire, Scotland, circa 1850.a
The Rev. John Kay, of Castle Douglas, is thought to have been a godfather to some or all of John & Anne's children.d
John and Anne suffered great tragedy in their family.    In 1855, two year old son Robert, left in the care of thirteen year old daughter Janet, drowned in a well on or near the family farm.d    On Robert's death, John wrote:d
Five years later, sons Andrew and John Kay both drowned on their way home from school, having fallen through the ice on the Hillend Reservoir.d    John then wrote "A few lines on the Death of my Sons":d
Death, cruel monster, would not spare my dear infant for me to rear.
