Born 1808.2
He married Anne Shaw4 [Ann Shaw5], Jun 18 18414, Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland4 [New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland5]. [it is unknown why their marriage was recorded at both churchs].
John lived at CrossRidge (possibly Crossriggs), New Monkland Farm, Lanarkshire, Scotland, circa 1850.2
The Rev. John Kay, of Castle Douglas, is thought to have been a godfather to some or all of John & Anne's children.3
John and Anne suffered great tragedy in their family. In 1855, two year old son Robert, left in the care of thirteen year old daughter Janet, drowned in a well on or near the family farm.3 On Robert's death, John wrote:3
Death, cruel monster, would not spare my dear infant for me to rear.
|
Five years later, sons Andrew and John Kay both drowned on their way home from school, having fallen through the ice on the Hillend Reservoir.3 John then wrote "A few lines on the Death of my Sons":3
Oh the stroke it is doubled, My two sons are laid low
First Sweet Robert, two [sic] years passed then dear Andrew and John Kay
Farewell my three sons, until the Last Day
