On Jan 3 1853 J. Charlotte of New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina, wrote a letter of introduction to President Millard Filmore, recommending his 16 1/2 year old son, John A. Charlotte, as a Cadet candidate for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.¹¹ John's father, John Charette, was apparently wealthy as in 1850 he was the owner of 14 slaves.¹²
