During World War II Merle served as Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class, U.S. Navy.4,5  Service #3288742.4,6  On Sep 30 1941 Merle Hinshaw was listed on the Muster Roll of the U.S.S. Lexington,6,7 which recorded he had enlisted Feb 25 1941 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.6,7  He also served on the U.S.S. Wright, sailing Oct 17 1941 from San Diego, disembarking at Pearl Harbor on Nov 1 1941.6  

Merle Wayne Hinshaw died Jan 7 1946.4,8  Merle was declared MIA Jul 17 1943;9 presumed dead Jan 7 1946.4,5,10,11  He is listed on the "Tablets of the Missing" at Manila American Cemetery, Fort William McKinley, Manila, Philippines.4,8  (Apparently also a monument at Oak Grove Cemetery, 515 Hwy 59 North, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota 56501).3
