A. Alan Hanshaw Died peacefully October 17, 2004, having spent his final hours with his loving family. He was predeceased by his mother, Deborah Sanborn Hanshaw Ahlvin; father, Armand and brother, Wallis. He is survived by his wife, Emma; sons, Mark, John, David and Andy; daughter, Debbie and sister, Sally Hanshaw Watson. Alan was a grandfather of eight.
Alan lived his life in the service of others, devoted to his family, church and community.
Born June 23, 1926 in Kankakee, IL, he attended Kankakee High School and graduated from St. Johns Military Academy (Wisconsin). He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines 1944-46. He attended Northwestern University and the Beloit College, moving to Tucson and graduating from the University of Arizona in 1951. He received his law degree from the University of Arizona Law School in 1955.
Alan met Emma, his wife of 53 years, at St. Mary's Hospital where Emma was a student nurse. They married on September 1, 1951 in Tucson.
Alan began his legal career as a clerk in the Arizona Supreme Court. He was an Asst. Attorney for the City of Tucson, 1956-58. He practiced law as a partner in the firm of Goddard, Gin and Hanshaw and Gianas for several years before setting off on an adventure as General Counsel for the U.S. Virgin Islands in St. Croix, 1964-65. He then returned to Tucson and resumed law practice until his retirement from the firm of Waterfall, Economidas, Caldwell, Hanshaw and Villamana in 1995.
Throughout his life, Alan gave unselfishly to other people and organizations. Some of his community involvement included: member of the Arizona Board of Pardons and Parole, Tucson Rotary Club, Vestry member and Senior Warden of Grace/St. Paul Episcopal Church, District Commander U.S. Power Squadron, Board President La Frontera Center, Campaign Chair Tucson United Way, Board of Governors Arizona State Bar Association, Board Member Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Sons of Norway, Christian Campus Ministry, Cactus Mariners, President Young Democrats Club, President 20/30 Club and Director Pima County Sanitary District.
Alan traveled the world and had a great love of the sea.
Services will be held at Grace St. Paul on Saturday, October 23, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace St. Paul Episcopal Church, The Maritime Museum of San Diego, 1492 N. Harbor Dr., San Diego, CA, 92101 or the American Lung Association, Arizona. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel.
Emma currently (2008) resides in Tucson, Arizona.5
