On 7 Mo. 14 1763 at Hopewell Friends MM (Virginia), Mary Handsher witnessed and signed the marriage certificate of Thomas Rees and Margaret Rees.4
She married John Stonebridge, before 7-7-1766.5
On 7 Mo. 7 1766 at Hopewell Friends MM (Virginia) Mary Stonebridge (formerly Handcher) was reported married out of unity.3,6
On 7-7-1766 Hopewell Friends MM recorded:7
At our monthly meeting of Hopewell held the 7th day of the 7th month 1766 the representatives being Calld they appear'd.
The women friends informd this meeting that Mary Stonebridg formerly Handcher has gon out in marriage with a man not of our Society and a Committee of women friend haveing paid her a visit on the ocation judg her not in a capacity to present to condemn her mis conduct therefore the meeting appoints Jesse Pugh to assist the women in drawing a testimony against her and produce to next monthly meeting for approbation
On 8-4-1766 Hopewell Friends MM recorded:7
At our monthly meeting of Hopewell held the 4th day of the 8th month 1766 the representatives being Call,d they appear,d.
The friend appointed to assist the women in drawing a testimony against Mary Stonebridg produced one to this meeting which was approved and signd and the meeting appoints William Pickering to assist the women in reading it to her and inform her of her Liberty of appeal and give a coppy if required if no appeal to read it at the close of a first days meeting and return it to be recorded
On 9-5-1766 Hopewell Friends MM recorded:7
At our monthly meeting of Hopewell held the 5th day of 9th month 1766 the representatives being calld they appeared.
The friend appointed to assist the women in reading the testimony sign,d against Mary Stonebridg report it hath been read to her and that She doth not incline to appeal but was not read at the close of a first days meeting it is ordered therefore to be read publickly before next monthly meeting by William Jolliffe and returnd among the papers to be recorded
On 10 Mo. 6 1766 at Hopewell Friends MM, Mary Stonebridge (formerly Hancher) was disowned for being married contrary to discipline.8
On 10-6-1766 Hopewell Friends MM recorded:7
At our monthly meeting of Hopewell held the 6th day of 10th month 1766 the representatives being call,d they appear,d for Hopewell but not for Crooked Run.
The Testimony Signd against Mary Stonebridg hath now been published and is return,d among the papers to be recorded
Whereas Mary Stonebridg formerly Handcher haveing had her education and made profession of the truth as it is held and believed on by the people called Quakers but for want of giving diligent heed to the Spirit of truth in her own heart hath suffered her self to be led astray so far as to be marryed by a hirling Teacher to a man not of our Society which action of hers being contrarey to the rules of our Discipline and the known practis of friends therefore for the clearing of truth we can do no less then testify against her the said Mary and do disown her to be a member of our Society untill She come to a Light of her misconduct and make Sattisfaction for the same which that She may is desired on her behalf Sign,d by order of Hopewell monthly meeting the 4th day of the 8th month 1766 by William Jolliffe Clk
