Nancy was not a biological child of Joe Clay Hanshew & Mary Ellen Smith, although she was recorded in the 1940 as Nancy Hanshew,2 and her birth is recorded (unnamed) as Hanshew,1 so it appears that she was raised using the Hanshew name. But she was actually a niece of Mary Ellen Smith.3
