Opra was born when his mother was only 16 years old.  His biological father's name is unknown.  Opra seems to have been raised by his maternal grandparents.  

Opra was shown in the 1940 census (Jun 4 1940), living in (or staying in) the household of a Leman & Florence Butler, Union Township, Clay County, West Virginia:6

Hanshaw, Opra, lodger, age 30, born in West Virginia; completed 6th grade; on Apr 1 1935 was living in the same place/area; single; occupation: labor, on saw mill.

He married Elsie Marie Adkins, Dec 24 1941, Wallback, Clay County, West Virginia.1,7,8,9  Elsie, daughter of John Noah Adkins & Margaret Sophia Overbaugh3,10,11, was born Sep 25 19243,10,11 [Sep 25 192512,13], Clay County, West Virginia3,10,11.  

Elsie was the sister of Beulah Roberta Adkins who married Opra's second cousin Noble Leo Hanshaw.14  

In 1995 Opra was living in/near Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia.3  

Opra Ernest Hanshaw died May 4 1995, buried Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery, 106 E. Main Street, Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia.3,11,15  

In 2000-2003 Elsie was still living in Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia.3,16  

Elsie died Oct 4 2003, buried Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery, 106 E. Main Street, Mannington, Marion County, West Virginia.3,11,12
