The following is a short biography by Marion Hinshaw, daughter of William Allen and Thelma:1
Allen was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa and grew up in Gridley, CA., attended Chico State College where he studied theology and where he met and dated both Gertrude Miller (once) and Thelma Pittman. Thelma won his heart, and they ran off to Reno to be married on 1-28-1934. Gertrude married his brother, Chester Hinshaw in 1932. Allen and Chester both worked for the Bank of America a few years, then Allen worked for the Diamond Match Co. Chester followed his brother and they both worked their way up from the outside yard to managing a yard in different towns. Shortly after the big Manteca flood in 1940 where he was Diamond Match manager, Allen moved to Willows to manage the Diamond Match Co. there. He got his Real Estate license and became an agent for State Farm Insurance around 1947. He stayed with State Farm until his accidental death on Nov. 15, 1962.
Allen and Thelma built their dream home NW of Willows in 1946-7 where they grew vegetables, alfalfa, horses, a cow called "Betsy", many calves and an orchard with peach, apricot, fig and cherry trees.
Allen belonged to the Kiwanis Club and was president of the Glenn County High School Board. He and Thelma were active in the First Methodist Church in Willows, where Allen served on the board, was a lay minister and taught the high school Sunday school classes. Thelma taught the Jr. High Sunday school classes, directed the Junior Choir and both Allen and Thelma sang in the adult choir. In 1958, after a disagreement with the religious philosophy of the Methodist Church, Thelma and Allen joined the First Christian Church of Willows.
Allen, Chester and their dad, and later their sons, went pheasant and deer hunting every year. Family vacations were always spent camping and hiking in the mountains.
When the children were well along in school, Thelma went back to Chico State to finish her degree and get her teaching credential. She taught 6th grade at Sycamore School in Willows from about 1956 to 1963. A year after Allen's death, Thelma taught school in Germany on U.S. military bases for 15 years. She visited over 60 countries and was on the first tour into China, sponsored by Germany.
