Neal had apparently been an orphan. In 1900, at the age of 12, Neal was listed as an "inmate" of Whites Iowa Manual Labor Inst. for Homeless Children in Cedar Township, Lee County, Iowa.9

On Jun 5 1917 Neal Dunlap, age 29, registered for the World War I draft in Morris County, Kansas. He declared he was born November 28 1887 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and was then residing in White City, Kansas where he was married and a self-employed farmer. He was recorded as tall, medium build, light blue eyes, light brown hair.10

Neal's obituary was published in the "Sacramento Bee" (Sacramento, California) on Tuesday, August 24, 1965 (page C-5):9

A member of the Lumber & Millwright Union of Sutter Creek, Calif. Funeral services will be held in the Lambert Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd., Roseville Wednesday August 29th at 2 p.m. Interment: Roseville District Cemetery.
