Morris Henshaw (spelled Hanshaw in some records), was born 2 October 1845 in Glouster, Athens County. A Morris Henshaw, age 4, was enumerated in the 1850 Athens County census in the household of Reason and Lucinda Risley (Canaan Tp., p. 63). In the 1860 census, under the spelling of Hanshaw, he was once again recorded with the Risleys. Next door was Granville, age 18, and Edward P. Hanshaw, age 12, in the household of Andrew C. Cagg , (Wat. Tp., p. 29).
Before the Civil War was over, the young Morris enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 174th Regiment O.V.I. on 13 August 1864. He was admitted to the General Hospital at Camp Dennison on 23 March 1865. He was discharged on 29 May 1865 at Camp Dennison, Ohio (ACMR Vol.1, p.37; ACRO). In 1899, while a resident of Hollister, he received an increase in his monthly pension from $8 to $10 (AM, 27 July 1899, p.5, cot.4).
He was married to Frances "Fanny" E. Spitser in Athens County on 1 August 1867 CACMR Vol. 5, p.97. The family was recorded in the 1870 Athens County census as follows Morris, age 24, farmer; Fanny, age 24; Edward, age 2; and Johanna, age 4 months (Athens Tp., p. 71B). They could not be located in the 1880 census. In 1900, the family included: Maurice, born October 1845, coal miner; Francis E., born March 1845, mother of eight children of whom seven were living; John H., born March 1873; and Arthur I., born July 1883 (Trimble Tp., p. 30B).
Morris died 23 October 1916 and was buried at Glouster in Athens County (ACRO, FB 55). There, however, was no death record for him at the Athens County Health Department. His obituary states: "Mr. Morris Henshaw died at his home in Glouster, Monday night, at 6 o'clock, after a lingering illness. Mr. Henshaw was one of Glouster's foremost men, having lived here for twenty years". "He had served for several years as township trustee and was in that office at the time of his death. Mr. Henshaw was born in Athens county, October 2, 1845 being in his 72nd year at the time of his death". "He was a member of the Church of Christ having become identified with that body about two weeks ago". "He is survived by his wife and five children, three being dead. Those living are Messrs. Edward Henshaw, John Henshaw, Arthur Henshaw, Mrs. Sayer and Mrs. Ottis Brandeberry, of Corning. The funeral will be held at the Christian church, Wednesday afternoon at 1:30" (AM, Tues., 24 Oct. 1916, p.5, col.31).
On 1 April 1918, John H. Henshaw filed an Application for Letters of Administration of his father's estate. In those papers, the following were named as heirs: John H., son, Glouster; Jennie Brandeberry, daughter, Coming; Algie Sayre, daughter, Glouster; Arthur, son, Glouster; Garnet Murphy, granddaughter, Hollister; Elmo Murphy, grandson, Michigan; Dolores Kempton, granddaughter, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Iris Kempton, granddaughter, North Carolina; Raymond Kempton, grandson, North Carolina; Morris Henshaw, grandson, Akron; Harry Henshaw, grandson, Akron; Annabelle, granddaughter, Glouster; Ollie Henshaw, granddaughter, Glouster; William Henshaw, grandson, Glouster; David Henshaw, grandson, Glouster; and Mabel Henshaw, granddaughter, Glouster (FB 55).
Frances, Morris' wife, died 24 December 1934 in Glouster and was buried near her husband. Her obituary states that she was survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Brandeberry of Toledo and Mrs. Algie Sayre of Glouster, and one son, John H. of Glouster (AM, Mon., 24 Dec. 1934, p.I0, col.3).
