He was born March 23, 1927 in Encino, California, where he lived until age 10, when the family moved to the Pittsboro, Indiana area, and subsequently to Osborn (now Fairfield), Ohio.  Les attended Osborn-Bath high school, participating in many sports, lettering in cross country, track, and football.  After graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps in Okinawa ('45-'46), rising to the rank of sergeant.  After his discharge, he returned to the Fairfield area to pursue a career in journalism.  At 22, he served briefly as editor of the then-weekly Osborn-Fairfield Herald (now the daily Fairfield Herald).

Subsequently, Les held positions with the Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio State Journal, the Ohio Manufacturers' Association, and North American Aviation, ultimately retiring from Battelle Memorial Institute as Public Relations and Community Relations Specialist and News Bureau Manager.  While at Battelle, Les also served as president of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in '67 and in 1968 was named PRSA's Distinguished Practitioner.

As an involved member of the Delaware County community, he was instrumental in the formation of the Buckeye Valley School District, personally writing, publishing, and distributing the Scioto Valley News, a newsletter promoting the consolidation of smaller districts.  He was a member of the Buckeye Valley School Board, serving as its president in '66 and '69, and was chairman of the Informational Committee of the campaign to establish the Delaware City-County Joint Vocational School.  Les was also on call 24/7 as a member of the Concord Township Volunteer Fire Department.
