Mack is remembered by his niece:6

As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Mack lived through the depression.  His older brother Odis was good at farming, Hurshal roamed the woods seeking out Indian herbal remedies, younger brother, Kenneth was adept at fishing and trapping and Mack was the best sharp-shooter in the family.  Grandpa would count the shells he handed out and expected a squirrel or other small game to match each shell.  Perhaps that was the cause of his becoming a sniper during the war that he would later enlist to fight in.  Mack never seemed to recover from the war.  Back then, folks called it shell shock, now it is treated as a medical condition.  As Mack married and became a father he still could not quite settle into civilian life.  He was gifted with mechanical abilities that allowed him to repair almost any car or motorcycle with relative ease.  As his marriage fell apart and he lost his children, he began to drink even more heavily.  I didn't think much about that, as a little girl, but rather understood that he was very sad, yet a gentle man.  He loved to listen to Kitty Wells sing and I would play her records for him.  He often wept.  Someone stole my beloved Collie, Sonny Boy, and I cried for days.  Uncle Mack met a man selling puppies, in a bar where he was drinking, and paid his last five dollars to buy one for me.  Although the little white ball of fur was no match for Sonny, I loved him because Uncle Mack gave him to me.  I named the puppy Snowball and he lived for 18 years, two years past Uncle Mack's death.  Grandma Henshaw lived with us and was always a bit "partial" toward her boy, Mack.  I was, too.  Grandma out lived her son and that was very sad.  Uncle Mack died at about 42 years of age from a brain aneurysm.  I am glad he was born and I wish I could have helped him.
