After his mother died in 1917 when Richard was only 5 years old, (and his father having abandoned the family), he went to live with his grandparents, William F. Walls (who was formerly Wall) and Josie Benbow Walls.  When he became a teenager, he legally changed his name to Richard Walls.7  

Richard was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 26 1920), living with his maternal grandparents, 237 N. Franklin Street, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana:2

Walls, Josie E, wife, age 54, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; occupation: house keeper.
Walls, Otto F, son, age 20, born in Indiana; father born in North Carolina; mother born in Indiana; single; occupation: laborer, garage.
Hinshaw, Richard P, grandson, age 7, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; attended school.

Richard was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 15 1930), living with his maternal grandparents, 237 Franklin Street, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana:4

Walls, Josie E, wife, age 64, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; first married at age 16.
Walls, Richard, grandson, age 17, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; attended school; occupation: laborer, odd jobs.

He married Carolyn Wilson, about 1930.7  Carolyn was born about 1908, Indiana.6

Richard and Carolyn separated.7  

Richard Philip Hinshaw died Nov - 1960, buried Glencove Cemetery, Knightstown, Indiana.3,5  

Carolyn died Jun - 1999.3
