Irene Kate Hanshaw Proverbs 31:28 -- Her children arise up, and call her blessed;....
Irene Kate Hanshaw, known to most people as Kate, was born in Widen, WV on December 23, 1921 to the late Gilbert Charles and Effie Ann Igo West. She married Waunie Wilson Hanshaw on October 6, 1940. She was a life-long homemaker and a member of the Valley Ridge Methodist Church.
In the early morning hours of October 11, 2010, Kate Hanshaw traveled the last mile of the way. Surrounded by her family in the place she called home for so many years, she walked through the valley of the shadow of death and reached for the hand of Jesus when He called her name. Leaving behind all the pain and troubles of this world, she now awaits her robe and crown.
Katie didn’t lay up the kind of treasures that the world deems necessary. Rather, she found her gold in the love of her children, her silver in the form of friends, knowledge in hard work, wisdom through patience, and most of all, joy through the saving grace of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was many things to many people - Wife, Mom, Granny, Sister, neighbor and friend.
She was a faithful wife to her husband Waunie who preceded her in death. She was Mom to 10 children and Granny to 18 grandchildren. One of them, her beloved granddaughter, Aimee Beth Griffith, departed this life 6 years before Granny. She also was Granny to 18 great-grandchildren. She was sister to Eugene Ralph West, Ellis Ray West, Kathleen Tvola Rogers, Cora Evelyn Thomas, Beaulh Maxine Steinman and Delcie May Murphy; all of whom preceded her in death.
She taught by example, disciplined with love, and forgave without question. Her ever- present smile and gentle nature were contagious, her graciousness made you feel welcome.
Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.....
Irene Kate Hanshaw had a good name. May those of us who were blessed beyond measure to have the privilege to call her Mom strive to follow the examples she gave and may the friends and neighbors she leaves behind remember for years to come this precious, precious lady.
Kate is survived by sons, Charles (Rose) Hanshaw of Fredericksburg, OH, Dana Hanshaw of Big Otter and David (Marie) Hanshaw of Valley Fork; daughters, Mary Lou (Joe) Summers of Wallback, Agnes Perkins of Valley Fork, Hazel (Dale) Griffith of Seville, Oh., Shirley (Blake) Jett of Looneyville, Phyllis Hanshaw of Millersburg, OH., Sharon (Rocky) Boggs of Valley Fork and Ruth (Dan) Webster of Seville, OH.
