On a family mission Paul, Oreta Burnham say goodbye to Philippines
The Rose Hill missionaries say they welcome a retirement near their family.

Paul and Oreta Burnham sorted through 30 years of memories, said goodbye to friends and bid farewell to a country and careers they loved.  Then they got on a plane and came home.

The couple -- parents of slain missionary Martin Burnham -- arrived in Wichita on Wednesday afternoon after a 24-hour flight from the Philippines, where they worked as missionaries.

Armed with colorful "Welcome Home" signs, about 30 family members and church friends greeted the Burnhams at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport.

Crowd members broke into applause when they spotted Paul and Oreta walking down the ramp at the airport gate.

Several grandchildren immediately rushed to them, helping them with their bags and giving hugs.  Adults followed their lead.

"I'm so glad they're here," Gracia Burnham said. "Bless their hearts."

The last few years have been tumultuous for the Burnham family.  They say their faith in God and family helped them survive.

In 2001, missionaries Martin and Gracia Burnham were kidnapped from a Philippine resort and taken hostage.  During that time, Paul and Oreta Burnham remained in Rose Hill, caring for their grandchildren.

Martin was killed June 7 when Filipino soldiers tried to rescue the couple.  Gracia was wounded in the leg.

Paul and Oreta Burnham returned to the Philippines last year to continue translating the Bible for members of the Ibaloi tribe, as they've done since 1970.

Returning after Martin was killed was a little different than in years before, Paul Burnham said.  Tribal members wanted to know details of what happened.

But they also found inspiration in his death.

"They saw that Martin was dedicated," Paul Burnham said, "and they wanted to follow him."

The couple say they would return to the Philippines only to visit family or friends -- not to work as missionaries again.

They are ready for the next part of their lives, they say, and plan to get settled in Rose Hill and relax.

"I'll believe that when I see it," Gracia Burnham said, laughing.

Oreta and Paul currently (2004-2007) reside in Rose Hill, Kansas.2,3
