During the Civil War William served in Company II, 60th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.4
William B. Hinshaw died Aug 30 1862, Richmond, Kentucky; buried Camp Nelson, Jessamine County, Kentucky.1,3,5 (Apparently re-interred in, or a marker placed in, Reitenour Cemetery, Ward Township, Randolph County, Indiana).4 William was killed in the battle of Richmond, Kentucky.3,4,5
William's untimely death, just two weeks to the day after his marriage, was noted in Hazzard's "History of Henry County Indiana 1822-1906", as follows:5
