Born Aug 25 18653,7,8 [about 186010], Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland3,7,8 [Glasgow, Scotland9].
He married Catherine McMillan, about 1886.1,4 Catherine was born about 18663,4 [about 186911], Scotland3,4.
Richard and family appear to have migrated firstly from Scotland to Canada, then later to Michigan. Son Joseph entered the U.S. in 1903/1908,12,13 with Richard and Catherine and remaining children finally entering in 1917.3,4
However Richard entered the U.S. as early as 1912, when he arrived April 7, 1912 at the Port of New York (Ellis Island), having departed from Liverpool on March 30, 1912 on the S.S. Caronia9 (see passenger manifest scan below). Richard declared he was age 47, born in Glasgow, Scotland, married, and a citizen of Canada. He declared he was a buyer employed by the R. Simpson Co. of Toronto, and his final destination was Toronto, Canada, where his declared relative was his wife, Mrs. C. Hinshaw of 1974 Queen East, Toronto. He declared he was not a polygamist nor an anarchist. He was recorded as 5' 6" tall, dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes.9
On Jul 5 1914 Richard and wife Catherine arrived at the port of Boston on the S.S. Franconia, having sailed from Liverpool on Jun 23 1914:11
