Joseph immigrated to Canada when he was 16 years old.^a

On Feb 15/24 1908 Joseph Hinshaw, age 23 and single, immigrated from Canada at the Port of Detroit.    He declared he was born in Glasgow, Scotland, had immigrated to Canada in Montreal on Aug 10 1902 on the S.S. Sardinian, and was then a resident of Montreal and a citizen of Canada, occupied as a telegraph operator.    He declarded he had never before been in the U.S., and was destined to join a friend, J.M. Reilly, 214 Majestic Bldg.. Detroit.    He declared his nearest relative was his father, Richard Hinshaw, of 186 Mance St., Montreal.    He was recorded as 5'3" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, in good health, not deformed or crippled, not a polygamist, and not an anarchist.^f,g

Joseph was a telegrapher in the Northwest Territories before settling, at first, in Toronto, and later in Detroit, Michigan, where he joined the stock exchange as a telegrapher.    Achieving physical stature of only 5'3", and an 8th grade education, he nevertheless reached high levels of success, most notably, he served two terms on the Board of Goveners of the New York Stock Exchange in the 1940's.^a

Joseph was shown in the 1910 census (Apr 21-22 1910), living in a boarding house at 574 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan:^h

On Jul 7 1916 Joseph Hinshaw, born Nov 2 1884, was naturalized a U.S. citizen^k at the U.S. District Court in Detroit, Michigan.^j

On Sep 12 [1917] Joseph Hinshaw, age 33, registered for the World War I draft in Oakland County, Michigan.    He declared he was born Nov 2 1884 in Scotland, and he was then residing in Birmingham, Oakland County, Michigan.    He declared his nearest relative was Besse A. Hinshaw of Birmingham.    He was recorded as short, slender, blue eyes, black hair.^e

On Jul 17 1928 Joseph & Bess arrived at the Port of New York, having sailed from Liverpool, England on Jul 7 1928 on the S.S. Scythia:^j
