Born Nov 5 1888, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri.3,4,5,7,8,9,10
As a teenager Harry worked at the St. Louis World's Fair. At the opening day ceremonies a parade was held. President Teddy Roosevelt's daughter, riding in a carriage in the parade, tossed a bouquet into the crowd. Harry caught the bouquet, presented it to his mother, and it was preserved as a family trophy for many years. Harry also worked as an usher at the old Garrick Theater during its Vaudeville days. Other employment included jobs at a livery stable, a mortuary and work on the railroad.8
He married Mathilda Anna Stuhlmacher, Mar 27 1917.1,8,11 Mathilda, daughter of Frederick + Wilhemna Stuhlmacher, was born about 1891, Missouri.3,4,5,8 Harry and Mathilda first met at a military funeral service at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery for Harry's grandfather Shanks.8,11
Mathilda's father had died in an automobile accident in 1891 before she was born. Her mother had married again, but her new husband (name unknown) had been abusive. In 1896 her mother died of consumption, leaving her an orphan. Mathilda had then been raised by a step-aunt and a step-grandmother living in Hog Hollow, Missouri.8
After their marriage Harry took a job in the maintenance department of Saint Lukes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, where he remained until his retirement about 1966.8
On Jun 5 1917 Harry Thomas Henshaw, age 29, registered for the World War I draft in St. Louis, Missouri. He declared he was born November 5 1888 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and was then residing at 6200 Suburban, St. Louis, Missouri where he was married and employed as a switchman for United Railway. He claimed a exemption due to a "lame leg". He was recorded as tall, slender, brown eyes, brown hair.10

In 1924 Harry and Mathilda moved to Buchanan County. About 1927 they moved with their four girls to a small home, built by Harry on an acre of land in Afton, St. Louis County, Missouri. Little by little the size of the home was increased to meet the needs of their growing family. The family were all members of the St. Louis Bible Fellowship Church.8
