On Sep 12 1918 David Bittle Hanshew, age 37, registered for the World War I draft in Marion, Smyth County, Virginia.  He declared he was born Nov 24 1880, and was then residing at 16 Pork St., Marion, Virginia where he was a traveling salesman employed by the International Harvester Co. of Knoxville, Tennessee.  He declared his nearest relative was Mrs. Beula G. Hanshew of Marion.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light hair.6
