Carroll had been ill for some time. On the day before he died he was released from the hospital; on the way home the family stopped at two places to pick up some of his things, including some hunting guns (which nobody thought anything of at the time). That evening they had a family meal together and talked before going to bed. After everyone else had gone to sleep, Carroll went to the garage (about 4:45 a.m.) and apparently shot himself. The next morning he was noticed missing, and the family then found him in the garage.3
