Glenn L. "Freddie" Henshaw Jr.
May 22, 1930 - May 30, 2013

Glenn L "Freddie" Henshaw Jr., 83, passed away at his home on May 30.

Freddie was born in Albany as the fourth son of Glenn L. and Christie Henshaw.  He graduated from Albany High School in 1948 where he lettered in football, set a record in the high hurdles and won an oratorical scholarship to Willamette University.  Foregoing college, he was a disc jockey and salesman at KWIL, KGAL in Albany, KXLF in Butte, Mont., and KIAS in Las Vegas, returning in 1959 to Albany to manage radio station KABY.

Freddie was born with no thumb or fingers on his left hand and dreamed of becoming a performer.  Piano was his instrument of choice and when a music teacher told him he would never be able to play piano, it was like dangling a red flag in front of a bull.  That determination and stubbornness led him to a two-week engagement in 1965 at Harold’s Club in Reno, Nev., and Harvey’s Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe that spanned three years.

In between stints in Nevada, he was invited to speak and perform at various functions and charity events in the Pacific Northwest.  Included was the presidential banquet to honor the handicapped in Washington, D.C., Walter Reed Hospital, Oakland Naval Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital, Elks Clubs and many organizations to benefit crippled children and veterans as well as benefit performances at the Oregon State Penitentiary.

Freddie was a runner up for Oregon’s 1969 nominee as Handicapped American of the Year and in 1974 was invited by Oregon Senator Bob Packwood to tour with the USO along with daughters Glenna and Pam entertaining troops for 45 days in the Asia Pacific.  Besides music, Freddie was a champion trap shooter, winning the Oregon Skeet competition in 1961 and tied for second place at the US Skeet competition in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was a scratch golfer, loved horses, mules and dogs.  Above all, Fred loved his beautiful wife of 62 years, Alice Marie Rose.  They lived in retirement on the same piece of land he played upon as a child.

Freddie will always be remembered for his directness and kind heart.  If you knew Freddie, you know he never danced around what was on his mind.

He is survived by wife Alice; daughters Victoria Henshaw Fonseca of Lincoln City, Pam Hagmeier of Portland and Glenna Franceschi of Santa Rosa, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

As per Freddie’s wishes, no services will be held.  If a remembrance is desired, please contribute to the charity of your choice.
