He married Matilda B. Nealles7,8 [Melissa Neely1,2,3,9,10], Nov 16 18477,8, Clay County, Missouri7,8. Matilda was born about 1826, Missouri.1,3

Joseph P. Henshaw, age 26, born in Virginia; teacher.
Melissa Henshaw, age 24, born in Missouri.
Slave:11 Jo P. Henshaw:
1 black male age 10.
Joseph and family were shown in the 1860 census (Aug 17 1860), Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri:3,12
Joseph P Henshaw, age 37, born in Virginia; merchant; $5200 real estate; $1140 personal property.
Melissia B Henshaw, age 33, born in Missouri.

Henshaw, Melissa, age 43, born in Missouri; keeping house.
Henshaw, Sterling [unclear] L. [initial unclear], male, age 10 [or 20 - unclear], born in Missouri; occupation: none.
It is unclear who was the last person enumerated in the 1870 census above (it appears that this was a census error in showing him as a Henshaw).
Joseph and family were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 30 1880), Centre View Township, Johnson County, Missouri:13
Henshaw, J.P., age 56, born in Virginia; parents born in Virginia; clerk in store.
Henshaw, Melissa B., wife, age 53, born in Missouri; keeping house.
Henshaw, William H., son, age 27, born in Missouri; father born in Virginia; mother born in Missouri; single; grocery merchant.
Sterling, Mary Lee, adopted daughter, age 18, born in Missouri; occupation: asst housekeeping.
Note that the 1880 census shows a Mary Lee Sterling adopted into this Henshaw family. She was shown age 18, yet 10 years earlier in the 1870 census there was a male Sterling, age 10, also living with these Henshaws. He was presumably her brother, apparently both orphaned.
Joseph P. Henshaw died 1893, buried Old Warrensburg Cemetery, Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri.2
Matilda died 1897, buried Old Warrensburg Cemetery, Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri.2
