BIG PRODUCER
BORN IN IOWA
William Wade Hinshaw, the millionaire producer of Mozart's opera, "The Impresario," was born in Union, Iowa, and several Iowa City people who were schoolmates of his are expressing a great interest in the coming production in the Natural Science Auditorium, December 8th.
As a young man, Mr. Hinshaw showed a marked talent for singing, and decided to become a musician by profession. Hard work, coupled with his native gifts, brought him to that goal which all singers long for and few attain, the Metropolitan Opera House, and for many years he was a member of that noted organization.
In 1916 he was made President of the newly formed Society of American Singers, a group of famous musicians in New York who have for five years now been producing "opera comique" in that city with striking success. But Mr. Hinshaw has larger aims for the society and this year he is carrying out his dream of having an opera given throughout the country in the same first class production which was seen in New York. With plenty of money and a consuming interest in his project he has been able to give to "The Impresario" settings of unusual richness and a cast of thoroughly competent artists, and from his office in New York he follows its progress through the land with deep interest and directs the arrangements for each performance.
The University Music Association has received several letters from Mr. Hinshaw in which he has expressed himself as being much pleased that Iowa City is to hear "The Impresario". "I am an Iowa man myself," he writes, "and a boyhood friend of Mr. Frank O. Lowden. If you want to know anything about me, ask him."
