About The Journal of Basketball Studies

Welcome to The Journal of Basketball Studies, an electronic clearinghouse of scientific research about the game of basketball. Originally developed with the intention of understanding how to construct a good basketball team, the methods used here are actually applicable to a large number of subjects, including environmental engineering, management science, chaos theory, and financial risk analysis. Now that I've gotten your attention, let me say that I rarely, if ever, mention those other subjects here because this is a hobby that is supposed to be fun. I do those other things for a living and don't need to do them in my free time.

This Journal is about basketball, not only because it is a hobby, but because it too has been my job off-and-on for several years as a player/coach/scout/consultant (fit that on a business card). If you're here reading this, you probably enjoy playing, coaching, watching, or at least talking about basketball, too. At some point in my life, I went over the edge and actually began applying science to the sport. I began to see basketball as an enormous series of experiments in human nature whose results can be easily measured. Usually I saw basketball as a lot of fun, but occasionally that weird scientific side of me kicked in and saw experiments -- or maybe it was just indigestion.

Regardless of the ill-gotten cause, the result is this, my personal contribution to the world's database, The Journal of Basketball Studies. Read it, study it, criticize it, but definitely bookmark it because there is nothing else like it anywhere.
