During World War I, Walt served in the U.S. Army in France, where he was gassed and wounded several times.3
After the war, Walt, having experienced new excitement in France, decided not to return to farm life. He settled in Chicago and stayed there for some time, alone, until finally his mother wrote him a letter insisting that he send for his wife and children.3
