Laten was a Rough Rider with Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War.3 He joined Company G, U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, on May 23 1898 at San Antonio, Texas. He was promoted to corporal on July 1 1898. He was mustered out on Nov 30 1898 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.8
He married Grace Marvin, Dec 22 1898, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.1,3,4 Grace, daughter of William Marvin & Sarah Struble, was born Mar 9 1869, Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan.1,3,4,5
Note that Laten married the sister of his sister Mindie's husband, Judson Marvin, i.e. Laten's brother-in-law Judson also became his new brother-in-law.
