David was shown in the 1910 census (Apr 27 1910), living as a boarder in the James Osborne household (next door to the family of brother Daniel in the Sewell Mountain District, Fayette County, West Virginia:5

Hanshew, Dave, boarder, age 26, born in West Virginia; parents born in West Virginia; married 1 year; occupation: mill labor, mill.

On Sep 12 1918 David Allen Hanshew, age 33, registered for the World War I draft in Fayette County, West Virginia.  He declared he was born Aug. 1st 1885, and he was then living in Longdere, Fayette County, West Virginia.  His occupation was teamster, employed by the Otto Marmet Co. of Raymond City, Putnam County, West Virginia.  He declared his nearest relative was his mother Kate Osborne of Smithers, Fayette County, West Virginia.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light brown hair.4
