Rev. William Clayton Hanshaw, Sr., age 74, of Lawton Road, Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away Monday morning, October 29, 2012, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, after an extended illness.  

He was born December 24, 1937, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, a son of the late Clayton and Maxine Tackett Hanshaw.  

Clayton graduated from Olive Hill High School in 1956 having played on the basketball team in 1953-54.  He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956, played lead guitar for a rock-a-billy band on the ship, worked in the ship's post office, and served four years as 3rd class Radarman sailing in the South Pacific during his tour.  He was employed as a Corrections Officer Supervisor at Kentucky Village Juvenile Delinquent Reformatory in 1961-1962.  He then became a Fayette County Police Officer from 1963 to 1966.  He was Chief of Police at the Bluegrass Airport 1966-1969.  He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service from 1969 to 1975.  He was the lead guitarist for a rock-a-billy band, The Triangles, based in Lexington, Kentucky from 1970 to 1975.  

Clayton became a born again Christian on December 31, 1975.  He was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister in 1977 and graduated from Clear Creek Baptist Bible College and Georgetown College with four Bachelors Degrees in Theology, Psychology, Christian Education, and Evangelism.  He pastored Kettle Island Baptist Church in Pineville, Kentucky from 1977-78, South Fork Baptist Church in Stanford, Kentucky 1978-79, Riverview Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky 1980-81, Highlands Baptist Church in Lexington 1981-83, North Frankfort Baptist Church in Frankfort 1985-86, Bethel Ridge Christian Church in Olive Hill 1992-1994.  He served as Associate Pastor to the First Freewill Baptist Church in Morehead, Kentucky from 1983-1984, Gearhart Community Church in Morehead 1994-2000.  Clayton was the host of the Living By Faith Radio Broadcast from 1990 to 1991.  He served as the Assistant Director of Strike Force Prison Ministry from 1998 to 2008 and served as an evangelist from 1979 to 2008.  

He was a real estate agent with Paul Semonin Realty in Lexington from 1990 to 1992.  He owned Pleasant Acres Pony Farm and was in the miniature horse/pony business from 1994 to 2002.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Rev. William C. Hanshaw, Jr.

Clayton is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evalena Sparks Hanshaw; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Von and Martha Hanshaw of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Howard and Amy Hanshaw of Winchester, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Timothy A. Hanshaw, Crystal Eve Hanshaw Judd, John C. Hanshaw, Jacob B. Hanshaw, Addyson E. Hanshaw; one great grandson, J. T. Judd; a good friend for over 50 years, Sonny Page; and a host of other family and friends who will sadly miss him.  

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Kentucky, with Rev. Myron Logan and Rev. Robert Kidd officiating.  Burial will follow in the Watson Cemetery in Olive Hill, Kentucky, with full military honors conducted by the Olive Hill American Legion Post No. 138.  

Friends may visit after 11 a.m. Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West US Highway 60, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164.  

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
