Myrtle Beach, SCJean H. Phalen Ginader released her hold on life June 30 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Clarence Preston and Fannie Mae Hinshaw, of Chapel Hill, NC.
Jean grew up on the dusty backroads of North Carolina, which etched in her psyche a fierce loyalty to the UNC Tarheels and Carolina blue. She attended Madison College, where she met and married her first husband, Thomas H. Phalen. The couple settled in Winchester, VA. where they raised three children, Thomas Henry Phalen ll, of Richmond VA, James Preston Phalen of Myrtle Beach, SC and Mary Elizabeth Phalen of Rocky Mount, VA.
Jean's early work with the Young Republicans contributed to her strong political interest in government and politics, which she followed ardently.
Jean enjoyed stimulating and opinionated conversation. She was a talented seamstress, fair gardener, weak cook, and wonderful baker and hostess. She passionately loved NCIS. She worked crosswords, loved dogs and birds, (no cats, please), and was a zealous reader. While a lover of all sports, including the Dallas Cowboys, she transformed into a Carolina blue fanatic during UNC basketball season.
Jean's three children are distinctively different and yet the same. Her sons are dedicated family men, while her daughter remains fiercely independent. All three children are in the service of helping others; Tom and Jim lifelong firemen, Beth a lifelong teacher. Jean was always proud of her children.
Jean resided in Myrtle Beach for over two decades with her second husband, Charles H. Ginader.
Surviving are her two sons, Tom and Jim, her daughter Beth, two grandchildren: Patrick Phalen, a State Trooper in Richmond, VA and Savannah Phalen Jeter, a self-employed mother of Jean's great-grand child, Lincoln Jeter, of Sneads Ferry, NC.
A Celebration of Life was held at her daughter's farm in Rocky Mount, VA on July 15th
