Cecil W. Hinshaw, 86, of Glennallen died at home March 20, 1998, of natural causes. A graveside service was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with the Rev. Urban M. Bates, O.P., officiating. Mr. Hinshaw was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Knoxville, Tenn. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from radio school in Long Beach, Calif. After his first enlistment in the Navy, he joined the Merchant Marines in 1942 and served until 1945 during World War II. While in the Merchant Marines, he graduated third highest in his class at the Maritime Academy. After World War II, he was employed with the Civil Aeronautical Administration, which later became the Federal Aviation Administration. He was stationed in Skwentna in 1946, Woody Island in 1948 and Glennallen Flight Service Station in 1949, retiring in 1982. Mr. Hinshaw was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of Glennallen American Legion Post 27, member of the Moose Lodge in Palmer and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Glennallen.
Survivors include his wife since 1936, Mildred Hinshaw of Glennallen; son, Cecil F. Hinshaw of Glennallen; daughter, Lucienne Harger; and granddaughter, Geneviene of Akiachale; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and George Palatas of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews on both his and his wife's side of the family. Service arrangements were by Witzleben Funeral Home, Bragaw Chapel.

Glennallen resident MILDRED M. HINSHAW died Nov. 28, 2000, at her home at Mile 164 Glenn Highway in Glennallen. Mrs. Hinshaw was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Richmond, Ind., to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Miller. She graduated from high school and attended two years of college followed by working as a riveter during World War II. On Oct. 31, 1936, she married Cecil W. Hinshaw. After the war, they moved from Long Beach, Calif., to Skwenta with the Civil Air Aviation in 1946, followed by an excursion to Woody Island and finally settling in Glennallen in 1949. Mrs. Hinshaw was active in the planning for the Glennallen library, led the local Girls Scouts, participated in the home extension gatherings and many other fund-raising activities in the valley. Mrs. Hinshaw was one of the voting volunteers during the first statehood vote in 1964. After 21 years as postmaster in Glennallen, she retired, but continued her association with the American Legion, NRA and AARP. After 63 years of marriage, her husband died in 1998. Mrs. Hinshaw is survived by her son, Cecil F. Hinshaw of Glennallen; daughter, Lucienne E. Harger of Barrow; granddaughter, Genevieve C. Harger of Anchorage; sister, Frances Schwartz of Trotwood, Ohio; brothers, Frank Miller of Riverton, Wyo., and Clarence Miller of Minster, Ohio; sister-in-law and husband, Sarah and George Palatos of Dayton, Ohio; niece, Sharon Palatos of Tamarac, Fla.; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory. Burial was next to her husband at Fort Richardson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Holy Family Catholic Church in Glennallen.
