According to a family story as told by Joseph Leonard Hinshaw, his great aunt Nettie wrote to him and requested that he not get married, but instead join her in Florida where she owned a hotel or business establishment. She in turn would take care of him with room & board and pay him a handsome salary. She was getting up in her years and needed the assistance of a young man for protection etc. Joseph graciously refused and married instead. Nettie is reported to have lost everything to dishonest employees and borders who befriended her and took her for whatever they could get.8

JOSEPH LEONARD HINSHAW 69, of Springfield, went to be with his Savior on June 9, 2001 after 6 months of illness. He was born in Bainbridge, (Ross County) Ohio, the son of Clifford Earl and Florence (Flick) Hinshaw. He was the youngest of 9 children. Joseph served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War January 1953 to December 1954, and received an honorable discharge. He was employed by Bauer Brothers from 1950 to 1972. He was co-owner of Hinshaw Suzuki Sales with his brother, Harold E. Hinshaw from 1972 to 1993. After retirement he enjoyed driving cars for Bill Marine, Tim Sheerin, and Buckles Motors. He was a faithful member of Southside Christian Fellowship Church. He was a beloved husband and father, survived by his wife of 46 years (June 4,1955), Christine Leonora (Boyer) Hinshaw; and 6 children: three sons, Mark (Jeanne) Hinshaw of Georgia, Terry Hinshaw of Florida, and Brian Hinshaw of Springfield; three daughters, Cindy (Gary) Brewer, Melissa (Bobby) Owens of Mason, Ohio, and twin sister, Lisa Hinshaw of Springfield; two sisters, Almeda Grace Rhinehart of Middletown, and Ruth Ann Lambert of Columbus; one brother, Harold E. Hinshaw of Springfield; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastors Jeff and Joyce Combs, on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at 6 p.m. at Southside Christian Fellowship Church, 1603 South Limestone Street, Springfield, Ohio 45505. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Southside Christian Fellowship. Everyone who knew him carries a special part of his uniqueness with them.
