Born May 28 1862, Waldeck West, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.^1,5,6,7,8,9  (Bear River, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia).¹⁰  

He married Harriett Bartlett, Jan 7 1888.¹  

Harriett died Oct 2 1888.¹  

He then married Ida Lillian Sanford, Sep 2 1890, Clementsvale, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.^{1,6,7,8,11,12}  Ida, daughter of Richard Harding Sanford & Rebecca Potter, was born May 23 1861, Clementsvale, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.^1,6,7  

Ida died Apr 24 1891, at sea on her husband's ship "Syanara"; buried at sea 225 miles from Cape Rio, Brazil.^1,11  

On Sep 15 1891, in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Letters of Administration for the estate of "Ida L. Henshaw (formerly Ida L. Sanford), late of Bear River, married woman", were granted to Herbert A. Henshaw, "husband, of Bear River, master mariner" (Estate Folio H155, 1891).  Will book page 181 further records "died at sea 24 Apr 1891".¹¹  

He then married Phoebe Helena Lovely^1,3,10,13 [Helena Phoebe Lovely⁴], Nov 14 1892^1,3,10,13, St. John, New Brunswick^1,3,10,13.  Phoebe, daughter of Rainsford + Georgianna Lovely^3,10,14, was born Aug 12 1869^3,10,14 [Aug 15 1868¹⁵], Perth, Victoria County, New Brunswick^3,10,14.  

About 1894 Herbert moved to New York City, where he was a seaman.⁵  

On Jul 12 1895 Herbert A. Henshaw was naturalized by the U.S. District Court of Boston, Massachusetts.  He declared he was born May 28, 1862 in Nova Scotia, and was then residing on Bowman St., Malden, Massachusetts.¹⁶  

On Sep 7 1901 Helena and sons arrived at the port of Boston, Massachusetts, on the S.S. "Boston", having sailed from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia:¹⁷

Herbert and family were shown in the 1911 census, Wolfville, Kings County, Nova Scotia; he was listed as a sea captain, employed in New York.¹⁴  

On Sep 3 1915 Helena L. Henshaw was issued a U.S. passport at the American embassy in London, England.  She declared she was born 15th August 1868 in Victoria County, New Brunswick, and her husband had emigrated to the U.S. from Nova Scotia about 1893, and he had resided 22 years in the U.S., uninterruptedly, from 1893 to 1915 in New York City and Boston, and he was naturalized in Boston on 12th July 1895; she declared she had resided in the U.S., uninterruptedly, from 1893 to 1906 in Philadelphia and Boston, and was then domiciled in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.  She was then temporarily residing at the Imperial Hotel, Hythe, and intended to return to the U.S. "at end of war".  She declared she intended to visit Great Britain & Ireland for "travel and residence", France for "visiting relatives", and Switzerland.¹⁵  

On Jan 31 1917 Helena L. Henshaw was issued a U.S. passport in New York, New York.  She declared she was born 15th August 1868 in Victoria County, New Brunswick, and her husband had emigrated to the U.S. from Bear River, Nova Scotia about October 1895 aboard the Schooner Mineola, and he had resided in the U.S., uninterruptedly, from 1895 to 1917 in New York and Boston, and he was naturalized in Boston on July 12th 1895; she declared she had resided in the U.S., uninterruptedly, from 1897 to 1917 in New York and Boston, and was then domiciled in New York, New York.  She declared she intended to visit England to "visit my son Elden R.L. Henshaw".  She was recorded as age 49, 5' 2 1/2" tall, gray eyes, gray hair, fair complexion, oval face, medium forehead, straight nose, round chin, medium mouth.¹⁵  

On Aug 7 1918 Herbert arrived at the port of New Orleans, Louisiana, as Master of the S.S. "Sixaola", having sailed from Havana, Cuba:¹⁹

Phoebe died Oct 17 1920, Wolfville, Kings County, Nova Scotia; buried Larlee Creek Cemetery, Victoria County, New Brunswick.¹⁴  

On Aug 28 1931 Herbert arrived at the port of New York, New York, on the S.S. "Pan Bolivar", having sailed from Aruba:²⁰

On Aug 15 1934 Herbert and siblings arrived at the Port of Boston on the S.S. Yarmouth, having sailed from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia:²²

In 1940 "Captain Herbert" Henshaw was living in Staten Island, New York.²³  

Herbert was shown in the 1940 census (Apr 2 1940), "Sailor Snug Harbor For Aged Sailors", New York, Richmond County, New York:⁹

Herbert Alexender Henshaw died Sep 15 1947, Sailor's Snug Harbor Hospital Ward #9, Sailor's Snug Harbor, Staten Island, New York; buried Sep 18 1947, Sailor's Snug Harbor Cemetery, plot #16, row #10, grave #17.^5,24,25,26  Herbert died from arteriosclerotic heart disease.⁵
